Bedrock Questions, Answered
Straight answers on cross-play, version matching, connecting to friends, Realms and servers, Microsoft accounts, and staying safe — with links to official sources where it matters.
These questions cover edition matching, compatible versions, account permissions, Realms, and supported connection paths. A connection failure can have several causes, so the answers use ordered checks rather than claiming one universal diagnosis. For step-by-step checks, use the guides page; for feature boundaries, see features.
Editions & cross-play
Java Edition runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux with community mods and Java servers. Bedrock Edition runs on Windows, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, Android, and iOS with cross-play, the Marketplace, and Realms. They use different multiplayer networks, so the two editions cannot join the same world. Mojang covers this in the Minecraft Help Center.
No. Because the two editions use separate multiplayer networks, friends must be on the same edition to play together. On Windows, Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC includes both editions, so you can open whichever one matches your friends.
Yes, as long as everyone is on Bedrock Edition and on the same game version. Cross-play works across supported Bedrock devices through invites, Realms, and featured servers. Some individual servers or worlds may choose to limit certain platforms.
Bedrock is one shared edition, and players can only join a world or server running the same version. Consoles and app stores publish updates at slightly different times, so a friend on a newer update may be temporarily unreachable until everyone updates. Checking for updates is the first troubleshooting step.
Connecting & troubleshooting
Start by checking that everyone uses Bedrock and compatible versions because those checks are quick and non-destructive. If they pass, verify Microsoft accounts, multiplayer permissions, platform online-service entitlement where required, service status, and the connection. Our guides page lists the checks without assigning one universal cause.
Confirm both of you have added each other, that the world or Realm has multiplayer enabled, and that you are on the same version. Re-send the invite after both devices have updated. If sign-in itself is failing, check the Xbox network status for an outage.
No. Joining a Realm, a featured server, or a friend's shared world needs no port forwarding. Port configuration only applies if you run your own Bedrock Dedicated Server, and it is documented in that server's
server.properties file and on the official server download page.If sign-in or multiplayer is failing for everyone at once, check the Xbox status page before changing any settings. A listed outage means the fix is simply to wait; if everything shows healthy, return to the version and account checks.
No. Console versions do not include an option to type in a custom server address, so they cannot connect directly to a self-hosted server. Console players join Realms or the featured servers listed inside the game.
Realms & servers
A Realm is a hosted subscription world. Standard Bedrock Realms supports the owner plus 2 other simultaneous players. Realms Plus supports the owner plus 10 and includes Marketplace Pass. Java Realms is separate. See the official Realms page.
Choose a Realm for the simplest setup, especially if console players are involved, since it needs no network configuration. Choose a free Bedrock Dedicated Server for larger PC and mobile communities where you want more control and are comfortable managing updates, backups, and your own network.
Yes. The Bedrock Dedicated Server is free official software for Windows and 64-bit Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or later, available only from the official server download page. Mojang states that other Linux distributions are not supported. It is server software, not a way to get the game itself for free.
Upload the world to a Realm, then sign into the same Microsoft account on your other device and play or download the world from that Realm. This lets you continue the same world on phone, console, or PC.
Accounts, safety & general
A free Microsoft account is required for Bedrock cross-play, Realms, and featured servers. PC and mobile do not need a console-style online subscription. Console players need a platform plan that includes online multiplayer; sharing and family-plan rules vary by platform.
Account privacy settings can block multiplayer, especially for child accounts. An adult in the family group should review Microsoft and platform family settings, save the change, then sign out and back in. Use the official Xbox privacy settings if the control remains unavailable.
Turn on two-step verification, never share your password or recovery codes, and only type your password on an official Microsoft sign-in page. Accept friend requests only from people you know, and use Microsoft Family Safety for child accounts. No fan site — including this one — needs your Microsoft password.
No, it is a paid game sold through official platform stores, though some platforms offer an official free trial. On Windows, Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC includes both editions in one purchase. Availability is shown on each platform's store.
Ray tracing is available on supported Windows PCs with compatible graphics hardware. You enable it with an RTX resource pack and a Video setting in the game. It is not available on consoles or mobile devices.
Add-Ons customise how Bedrock worlds look and behave using resource packs and behavior packs. Official Add-Ons, worlds, skins, and texture packs come from the in-game Marketplace and install directly in the game. Bedrock does not use Java-style mod folders.
Yes, on Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch: connect another controller and press start to join. Split-screen is not available on the Windows or mobile versions.
Featured servers are partner communities listed in the game's Servers tab that you join with one click — no address to type in. Joining the list itself is built into the game, though individual servers may sell their own optional extras. They are the main way console players join large public communities alongside Realms.
Some antivirus tools warn about any large download or an unfamiliar launcher, and files from unofficial "free" or repack sites can be unsafe. Download Minecraft Bedrock from this site using the platform buttons on the download page.
Refunds are handled by the store where you bought the content or Minecoins — the Microsoft Store, PlayStation Store, or Nintendo eShop — and each has its own policy. Contact the store where the purchase was made rather than this site.
